In early 2022, made possible by generous funding from the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, data.org launched the Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) in the United States. The grant included a funding award to The University of Chicago (UChicago) Data Science Institute (DSI) to support the creation of a consortium of diverse higher education partners, including historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), minority-serving institutions (MSIs), and Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs).

In partnership with UChicago, data.org’s US CAN Accelerator included: California State University, Fresno; City Colleges of Chicago; Howard University; Morehouse College; North Carolina State University; The University of Illinois at Chicago; and University of Texas, San Antonio. Together, this Accelerator set out to create open curricula tools, and a model for experiential data science education with an emphasis on financial inclusion that could scale across diverse higher education institutions across the globe.

Now, on December 14, Dr. Mario Banuelos of Fresno State, Kate Connor of City Colleges of Chicago, Dr. David Uminsky of the University of Chicago, and Dr. Amy Yeboah Quarkume of Howard University will join data.org’s Priyank Hirani to reflect on learnings from the two-year Data Capacity Accelerator. Join us to hear from university faculty on the frontier of building data for social impact in higher education on topics including developing DSI and experiential learning programs, applying a social justice and financial inclusion lens to DSI training, building a playbook for creating experiential data science curricula, and the critical underpinning of IDEA in their work.

In data.org’s 2023 report, Accelerate Aspirations, they advocate for increased cross-sector collaboration in order to move the needle on the globe’s most pressing social challenges, such as financial inclusion and climate change. But the question remains: How might we accelerate the adoption of data and tools in financial inclusion for better, faster insights to advance climate initiatives in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs)?

These advances are only possible through shared incentives that benefit everyone involved in the data value chain—from the private companies that hold actionable data to the social impact organizations leveraging data and the local farmers impacted by extreme weather caused by the climate crisis.

In their panel, Seeking Shared Incentives: Cultivating Cross-Sector Data Collaboration to Combat the Climate Crisis, data.org brings together key perspectives to identify what shared incentives in fact exist, how to identify opportunities for greater alignment, and how we can ensure ethical data practices and equitable incentives.

This is a virtual session from Financial Inclusion Week 2023.

As part of data.org’s commitment to helping train and engage one million purpose-driven data practitioners by 2032, we are actively engaged in various projects and initiatives across five geographies (India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the United States). We recognize the importance of robust Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) / Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) systems to ensure our programs are effective, transformative, and accountable.

Through our MEL RFP, we seek a partner (experienced firms or consultants) who can support us in developing and implementing comprehensive MEL/MEAL systems to guide our initiatives in these regions as they scale in scope and impact.

This webinar session will serve as a virtual Q&A for interested parties and will be hosted by data.org’s Director of Digital Learning, Ronda Železny-Green, Ph.D.

Current global temperatures are 1.1°C higher than pre-industrial levels, causing increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Record-breaking temperatures have triggered public health emergencies, raised heat-related mortality rates, damaged forests and crops, and heightened infrastructure risks. The lack of affordable and accessible cooling solutions further compounds these challenges, especially for vulnerable groups. The Chilling Prospects Special: Gender and Access to Cooling reveals that women are 1.6 times more at risk than men of lacking access to cooling.

Gaps in disaggregated data on gender-differentiated needs impede the development of policies for equitable access to cooling. While efforts to improve sustainable access to cooling have increased across sectors, few adequately address women’s unique adaptation needs and leverage their knowledge to enhance the effectiveness of the interventions. BASE has been developing a toolkit, mainly through the Your Virtual Cold Chain Assistant project, to mainstream gender in climate finance projects. The project aims to increase smallholder access to cooling, reduce postharvest losses, and enhance incomes.

BASE and SEforALL invite cooling companies, practitioners, and policymakers in cooling, climate change, adaptation, and equitable energy transition to join this webinar. By exploring data gaps and needs from diverse perspectives, the discussion aims to identify the necessary data collection methods and types to advance our shared objective of universal access to cooling.

In June 2022, data.org, in partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and Dalberg, released Workforce Wanted, a data talent for social impact report. This first-of-its-kind report on global data talent in the social sector explored systemic challenges, highlighted immediate opportunities, and identified pathways forward in building the data for good sector.

The key finding from Workforce Wanted? We have the unprecedented opportunity to cultivate 3.5 million data for social impact professionals in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) over the next ten years.

Now, one year later, data.org brings together the voices of those who have been key in building the field of data for social impact through data.org’s Capacity Accelerator Network. Moderated by data.org’s Chief Data and Technology Officer, Uyi Stewart, Ph.D., our Workforce Wanted: One Year of Growing Global Data Talent panel dives deeper into the steps taken since the Workforce Wanted report’s debut, lessons learned one year into growing the data for social good sector, and what challenges and opportunities year two presents.

Gender data gaps are widely documented in fields from medicine to urban planning to product design. Yet, these same datasets, rife with biases, are being used to inform AI applications, which in turn, perpetuate (if not worsen) the gender inequalities found across society. Given that AI is playing an increasingly critical role in our global technological, economic, and medical systems, and considering that only 16% of skilled AI workers are women, it’s a problem that’s set to only get worse. Yet, it cannot be ignored that there are huge opportunities for AI to contribute to solving society’s greatest humanitarian and environmental challenges. So does AI have a rightful place in advancing gender equality?

This session at the 2023 Global Digital Development Forum, Ronda Železný-Green, Ph.D., alongside a panel of gender and data equity experts, will begin by debating the merits of AI and gender. Building on fresh research and case studies, we will consider both the risks that AI presents in perpetuating inequalities, but also the promise of leveraging it to narrow the gender gap. Panelists will then examine new applications of AI to advance gender equality and will surface emerging practices to scale adoption by policymakers.

In the recently launched Accelerate Reportdata.org calls for greater access to digital public goods (DPGs) to drive social and environmental change.

Globally, digital public goods such as software, data sets, AI models, standards, curriculum/learning content, etc. have been identified as critical for achieving sustainability and scale of national and international digital development. One key dependency: we need a corresponding skilled population that is trained to use and apply these public goods.

So, how do we get there? How do we apply these dynamic tools and resources to address social challenges? How do creators of DPGs ensure that they are creating tools in concert with others to avoid siloed or duplicative projects? How can social impact organizations early in their data maturity journey begin to leverage DPGs, and where is the workforce to support this? And how do we build this transparent ecosystem of resources with inclusive and equitable values?

Join Cormekki Whitley, data.org’s Chief Finance and Administration Officer, and a panel of technical and domain experts for a deep dive to tackle these questions and more about digital public goods. This online event will provide background on DPGs, explore the work of those building and leveraging DPGs, and highlight the application of DPGs through financial inclusion and public health/epidemiology use cases. These free and open resources are foundational infrastructure for our emerging data for social impact field. Together, we can make it stronger, more sustainable, and transformative for all.
