The University of Chicago

The University of Chicago (UChicago) is an urban, private research university that has driven new ways of thinking since 1890. With its main campus on Chicago’s South Side and seven international campuses and centers throughout the world, students can choose from 53 majors and 47 minors in the undergraduate College, with four divisions and seven professional schools for graduate study. In 2023, there were 7,653 undergraduate students and 10,870 graduate students across the university, more than 190,000 alumni worldwide, and 99 Nobel laureates affiliated with UChicago. 

The UChicago Data Science Institute (DSI) executes UChicago’s bold, innovative vision of Data Science as a new discipline. The DSI drivesseeds research on the interdisciplinary frontiers of this emerging field, forms partnerships with industry, government, and social impact organizations, and supports holistic data science and AI education. 

In 2021, The University of Chicago was named one of eight data.org Inclusive Growth and Recovery Challenge awardees. The University of Chicago is piloting a project to study fiber connectivity, broadband throughput, application performance metrics, pricing data, and information about subscriptions/affordability to understand communities in Chicago’s access to affordable, high-speed internet. The project’s goal is to create a complete assessment of a city’s broadband infrastructure that can be used to investigate innovative infrastructure solutions, raise awareness about this critical issue, and empower policymakers, industry leaders, and the public to make better and more informed decisions.
